BREAKING NEWS: SWAT team in standoff with Dos Palos suspect

A 30-year-old Dos Palos man surrendered to Merced sheriff's deputies late Friday, following a five-hour standoff, authorities told the Sun-Star.

Mickey Rey Jr. came out of a South Dos Palos home coughing and wheezing, after deputies used a tear gas to end the confrontation, Capt. BJ Jones said.

No injuries were reported and no shots were fired. Rey is a possible suspect in at least one robbery in Fresno County, authorities confirmed.

A Dos Palos police officer spotted a man, later identified as Rey, around 3:45 p.m. driving a stolen vehicle that matched a description of a car used in a robbery earlier Friday in Fresno County, deputies said.

Rey was followed to a home in the 1500 block of L Street.

Several people came out of the house when law enforcement arrived and confirmed Rey was inside the house, deputies said.

Deputies used an armored vehicle to shield other SWAT team personnel while they removed the stolen vehicle from the driveway, allowing deputies to establish a better tactical position, Jones said.

Inside the vehicle, deputies found a shotgun and a replica handgun, Jones said.

After numerous orders to surrender were ignored, deputies deployed tear gas into the home and Rey eventually surrendered.

He was treated at the scene and booked into the Merced County Jail on numerous felony allegations, including several outstanding warrants, deputies said.

"The goal is always to bring these types of situations to an end without any injuries," Jones said afterward.

6:30 p.m. Friday

Law enforcement officials on Friday evening surrounded a house in the 1500 block of L street in South Dos Palos, where they believe a 30-year-old man is hiding, officials confirmed.

Merced County sheriff’s deputies believe the man may be a suspect in an armed robbery reported earlier today in Fresno County.

It was not immediately clear whether any other people were inside the home. Deputies said the man possibly was armed.

Sheriff’s special weapons and tactics personnel were on the scene, along with officers from the Dos Palos Police Department, the California Highway Patrol and the Fresno County Sheriff’s Department, authorities said.

A Dos Palos police officer around 3:45 p.m. Friday spotted a vehicle matching the description of car possibly used in the reported robbery, Sgt. Delray Shelton confirmed.

Officers followed the vehicle to the home on L Street and the man apparently ran inside the house before police could capture him, authorities said.

Authorities surrounded the home and ordered people inside to come out. Although several people complied, the suspect apparently remained inside, authorities said.
