The Sacramento Kings fired coach George Karl Thursday following another season in which the team failed to make it to the playoffs.
Team owner Vivek Ranadive and general manager Vlade Divac made clear at the beginning of the season that they expected big things from the Kings this year.
“After evaluating the team’s performance this season, I determined it was necessary to move forward with a new voice from the head coaching position,” Divac said in a statement.
But were those expectations realistic? Looking back at preseason predictions from NBA experts, the Kings won about as many games as expected.
The pundits at Sports Illustrated, ESPN, FiveThirtyEight and several other publications predicted, on average, that the Kings would win 35 games this year. The Westgate Las Vegas SuperBook predicted they would win 31. The Kings won 33, four more wins than the team managed in 2014-15.
Bee Kings reporter Jason Jones and columnists Andy Furillo and Ailene Voisin predicted before the season that the Kings would not make the playoffs. That took 41 wins this year.
The next coach will be the fourth hired since Ranadive took over in May 2013.
This chart shows preseason predictions and odds from several leading voices on how the Kings would finish this season.
