A Sacramento Bee series chronicling the plight of Afghan refugees in Sacramento has been honored with a top photojournalism award from Editor & Publisher, a leading newspaper industry journal.

E&P named “No Safe Place” its 2016 EPPY Award winner for best photojournalism of a website with at least 1 million unique monthly visitors. The special report is infused with poignant photography by Bee photojournalist Renée C. Byer that captures the refugees’ struggles in Sacramento. Sue Morrow, deputy director of multimedia, edited the visual work. Nathaniel Levine, The Bee’s news editor and graphics designer, created the website design.

This year’s EPPY Awards recognized the best digital media websites across 31 categories. Winners were selected from an international pool of entries.
