1. Fall storms softened the Sierra’s contours with new layers of snow, creating gentle winter scenes at aptly named Serene Lakes near Donner Summit over the weekend and into Monday.

2. Gov. Jerry Brown and his wife, Anne Gust Brown, played the gracious Halloween hosts at the Governor’s Mansion on Monday, dressing up their two corgi’s to help greet trick-or-treaters.
