1. Fall storms softened the Sierra’s contours with new layers of snow, creating gentle winter scenes at aptly named Serene Lakes near Donner Summit over the weekend and into Monday.

3. Mule Creek State Prison is a tough place, but the effect on inmates there – on the atmosphere overall – from the presence of dogs brought in as part of a new program has been call “magical” by one prisoner.

A program called Tender Loving Canines is among the new and restored rehabilitation courses popping up in California state prisons since Gov. Jerry Brown began emphasizing programs that help inmates prepare to reenter society.

4. An Elk Grove man, David Brenden McDaniel, 24, was killed in an automobile accident Wednesday on Grant Line Road that also injured another person and involved three vehicles.

One man died Wednesday afternoon in a fatal crash involving three vehicles on Grant Line Road in the Elk Grove area, according to CHP Sgt. Sean Kent.

5. Chinook salmon are on the march, getting much-needed help with the opening of the fish ladder at Nimbus Fish Hatchery on the American River.

Wednesday, Nov. 2, 2016, was the first day the fish ladder at Nimbus Fish Hatchery was opened for the fall run of Chinook salmon, giving those impressive fish some important help in successfully going through their life cycle.
