Accident over American River blocks traffic on Business 80 near Cal Expo

A vehicle accident just after midnight Saturday morning briefly closed northbound lanes of the Capital City Freeway near Cal Expo, causing traffic to back up into midtown Sacramento and Highway 99.

According to the California Highway Patrol’s incident log, two motorcycles and a van were involved in a collision around 12:20 a.m. on a bridge carrying Business 80 over the American River, just south of Cal Expo.

Traffic began flowing again just after 1 a.m.

A CHP patrolman on scene said two motorcyclists involved were taken to hospital with serious injuries; the driver of the van was not injured, he said.

The CHP said the accident is under investigation.
