Good morning. Here’s what you need to know today, Monday, June 15.
A cool breeze after a day in the 90s?
Here’s hoping that the Delta breeze starts blowing Monday night when the River Cats play the Fresno Grizzlies at Raley Field. The National Weather Service predicts a high of 91 degrees in Sacramento as high pressure continues to influence temperatures up and down the Central Valley. The high in Redding is expected to reach 98 degrees.
New fiscal year budget hearings begin
The Sacramento County Board of Supervisors will begin three days of budget hearings for the fiscal year that begins July 1, starting with a discussion of spending related to law enforcement agencies, parks and animal care. Monday’s hearing begins at 9:30 a.m. at the Sacramento County Board Chambers.
Ben Carson to make pit stop in Sacramento
California is a rare pit stop on the presidential campaign trail (unless wealthy donors and their checkbooks are involved), and Sacramento an even rarer one. But Mayor Kevin Johnson has secured a visit from retired neurosurgeon and Republican presidential candidate Ben Carson for the latest meeting of Johnson’s African American empowerment organization Indivizible, at 6 p.m. at the Guild Theater. Carson is a favorite in conservative political circles for his sharp criticisms of President Barack Obama, though that outspoken nature also has led to the occasional controversy, particularly when he shares his thoughts on homosexuality.
Rancho Cordova to discuss Measure H funds
The Rancho Cordova City Council will discuss how to spend revenues from the city’s new sales tax increase, known as Measure H. The council is also considering a resolution that continues the city’s 2014-15 budget into the next fiscal year that starts July 1. In the agenda packet for Monday night’s meeting, city staff said the budget vote has been delayed so the council can first decide how to spend Measure H funds. Staff made a point of saying that extending the current budget into the next fiscal year “does not imply fiscal concerns and/or distress.” The meeting begins at 5:30 p.m. at Rancho Cordova Council Chambers.
Town Center sealing and striping changes
Because of sealing and striping planned for Town Center, the El Dorado Hills Park and Ride lot at Post Street will not be served Monday through Wednesday, according to the El Dorado County Transit Authority. Commuters are asked to park at the Vine Street and Mercedes Lane lot next to Regal Theaters. All morning and evening buses scheduled to serve the Post Street lot will serve the Vine Street lot. Regular service to the Post Street location will resume Thursday.
- Sacramento River Cats vs. Fresno Grizzlies, 7:05 p.m., Raley Field. A large crowd is expected as Giants pitcher Matt Cain, a three-time all-star, will make a rehab start for the River Cats.
