Shirey contract vote expected

The Sacramento City Council is expected to vote on a 17-month contract extension for City Manager John Shirey. He was hired as city manager in August 2011, and his last contract extension was set to expire at the end of this month. The City Council will meet in closed session to discuss the contract starting at 4:30 p.m. before convening open session at 6 p.m. at City Hall.

Twin Rivers budget reviewed

The Twin Rivers Unified School District Board of Trustees will hold a public hearing to examine its budget for the 2015-16 fiscal year that starts July 1. The nearly $300 million spending plan represents a 2.4 percent increase over last year’s budget. The board meets at 6 p.m. at the district’s McClellan headquarters.

Library to fete Bloomsday

The Sacramento Public Library will celebrate Bloomsday, the anniversary of both the fictional events in James Joyce’s “Ulysses” and Joyce’s first outing with his wife in 1904, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. There will be a traditional Irish music performance by Sacramento City College World Music Ensemble director Bob Wren and a talk about Joyce by Irish literature professor Gregory Dobbins of UC Davis at the Central Library, 821 I St., Sacramento. Guests are invited to dress in Edwardian costume, circa 1904. Metered street parking is free after 6 p.m.
