Kudos to: Sacramento’s Shalom School students

Accomplishment: Gathered canned food donations to share with two food banks

Details: The campus was cordoned off in order to fill a gigantic Star of David with food for the needy. The canned goods were given to the Sacramento Food Bank and the Sacramento Kosher Food Pantry.

Kudos to: Lily Tang and medical personnel at Sutter Memorial Hospital

Accomplishment: Helped save the life of Tang’s husband, George Vaughn

Details: Vaughn was taking a shower Sept. 4 when he had cardiac arrest and fell unconscious, which awoke his wife. Using CPR training she learned 20 years ago, she kept him alive. At Sutter Memorial, Vaughn, in a ventricular fibrillation storm, was saved after more than eight hours of intense medical work.

Kudos to: Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District Fire Chief Kurt P. Henke

Accomplishment: Fire Chief of the Year from California Fire Chiefs Association

Details: Henke pursued a balanced fiscal approach and developed new streams of revenue to avoid further service reductions, according to the chiefs association.
