Rancho Cordova woman dies of injuries suffered in Nov. 3 attack

A woman who was brutally attacked in her Rancho Cordova mobile home Nov. 3 has died of her injuries.

The Rancho Cordova Police Department announced Thursday that 78-year-old Jean Bain died Tuesday at UC Davis Medical Center, where she had been hospitalized since the attack in which her husband was killed. Melvin Bain, 78, died at the scene from blunt force trauma.

Sacramento County sheriff’s homicide detectives arrested Shauna Burton, 36, on Nov. 4 on suspicion of murder in Melvin Bain’s death. With Jean Bain’s death, Burton faces an additional murder charge, sheriff’s officials said.

Rancho Cordova police were called to the Briarwood Mobile Home Park on Routier Road about 11:40 a.m. Nov. 3 by a neighbor who saw the Bains’ front door ajar and went to check on the couple.

Early the following day, detectives arrested Burton on suspicion of murder, assault with a deadly weapon, robbery, car theft and violation of probation.

The attack on the Bains allegedly was part of a series of crimes that began early Nov. 3. Investigators allege that sometime before 7 a.m., Burton stole a maroon Cadillac Eldorado from a neighbor on Aries Way and drove to a CVS Pharmacy on Zinfandel Drive, where she claimed to have a gun and demanded cash. The robbery was reported to police at 7:12 a.m.

The Cadillac was found abandoned about 9:30 p.m., but detectives believe Burton used it to visit the Bains’ home sometime between the robbery at the pharmacy and the time the Bains were discovered, sheriff’s officials said.

Burton allegedly used a Maglite flashlight and a knife in the attack on the couple, according to the criminal complaint against her.

Sheriff’s detectives have said that Burton was an acquaintance of the Bains, and that Melvin Bain occasionally gave her money.
