A Fair Oaks man was arrested Friday on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter for allegedly killing a pedestrian while under the influence of drugs.
Gary Brian Wickey, 53, was booked into Sacramento County jail on the manslaughter allegation, along with allegations of felony driving under the influence and being under the influence of a controlled substance. He is being held in lieu of $250,000 bail, said California Highway Patrol Officer Lizz Dutton. Wickey is a Fair Oaks resident, according to public records.
Wickey allegedly struck and killed Julie Newton, 55, of Elk Grove. Newton was walking with her father along Winding Way near Mont View Park about noon Wednesday when a car that CHP investigators say Wickey drove had veered across an oncoming traffic lane and hit Newton.
Newton later died at Mercy San Juan Medical Center in Carmichael, said family members. Newton’s father was not hurt.

The car went down an embankment and struck a tree. Wickey was injured and was hospitalized at Mercy San Juan, Dutton said. Wickey was released from the hospital earlier Friday and was arrested.
