Youth robotics competition
Nearly five dozen student teams from throughout the Sacramento region will gather Saturday at St. Francis High School in east Sacramento for the kickoff of this year’s FIRST Robotics Competition, a six-week intellectual obstacle course that challenges the high school-age participants to design, build and program a robot using a standard kit of parts and a common set of rules. St. Francis High’s “Fembot” squad is one of the Sacramento-area teams that have earned a trip to the national championships in previous years.
Behind the news: FIRST – For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology – was founded in 1989 by inventor and entrepreneur Dean Kamen. The New Hampshire-based nonprofit offers programs aimed at motivating young people to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and math.
