A young man walks into the newly opened Sheriff Service Center in Carmichael. His car was burglarized. He describes a video taken from his dash cam that shows a man breaking the window. With a concerned look and a reassuring manner, Louise Throne takes down his information and files an incident report. Throne is among the volunteers who run the center that serves Carmichael, Orangevale, Foothill Farms and Fair Oaks. Over the past nine years she’s assisted the public with non-emergency crime reports, helped out at community events and patrolled neighborhoods in a “Volunteers in Partnership with the Sheriff” (VIPS) vehicle. The Carmichael center is open Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, but Throne said they hope to extend the hours with the help of more volunteers. The Orangevale resident said she volunteers to help the community where she lives “while helping deputies who put their lives on the line each day.”
