Two English teachers, one from the San Juan Unified School District and the other from the River Delta Unified School District, have been named Sacramento County Teachers of the Year 2015.
The honors were announced Friday by the Sacramento County Office of Education during a countywide teacher recognition dinner.
Michelle Bebout teaches ninth- through 11th-grade English at Casa Roble High School in Orangevale. Jennifer Walker teaches English and Advanced Placement English at Clarksburg Middle School and Delta High School in Clarksburg.
Both teachers are AVID – Advancement Via Individual Determination – certified instructors. AVID is an elective and schoolwide system promoting increased college eligibility and access to rigorous curriculum that offers students a clear-cut path to college, beginning in middle school, according to a County Office of Education news release.

A selection committee of educational professionals, including previous Teachers of the Year, interviewed local district Teachers of the Year and selected the two finalists.
Bebout and Walker are eligible to advance to the statewide competition, in which five teachers will be chosen as California Teachers of the Year. Their names and that of the individual selected as the state’s nominee to the National Teacher of the Year Program will be announced this fall by Tom Torlakson, state superintendent of public instruction.
