AM Sacramento: Here’s what you need to know for Sunday

Good morning. Here’s what you need to know today:

Hot, then breezy: After three consecutive days of 100-degree weather, Sacramento is expected to have a fourth today, according to the National Weather Service. But the good news is the Delta breeze is forecast to return tonight and the temperature should top out at 93 on Monday. The record in Sacramento for the most consecutive days above 100 degrees in September is six, according to the weather service.

Strong pitch: Backed by a nascent ownership group and a passionate fan base that has earned national attention, Sacramento has emerged as a front-runner in the heated competition to land what might be the last available expansion spot in Major League Soccer for years to come. MLS executives are scheduled to visit the area this week for an intense two-day assessment of the region’s viability as a landing spot for the nation’s premier soccer league. Elk Grove is making its own separate bid for an expansion team, and also will meet with league officials this week. But, at least for now, league insiders say Sacramento with its plan for a downtown stadium is on stronger footing.

Decisive win: On the pitch, Sacramento Republic FC won its first-ever USL Pro playoff game, routing the Wilmington Hammerheads 4-1 Saturday night at Bonney Field. The Republic FC will host the LA Galaxy II at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 20 in the playoff semifinals.

Prison for Ponzi schemers: Three Ponzi schemers who robbed and pillaged the savings and lives of dozens of Sacramento-area families were sent away Friday for long stretches in prison. “This case is one of the most egregious in terms of taking advantage of people who will never, ever get back (financially) to where they were. They don’t have enough years left,” U.S. District Judge Troy L. Nunley said.

Rockin’ the park, Day 2: The Aftershock 2014 rock festival continues its thundering two-day run today at Discovery Park in Sacramento. Gates open at 11 a.m. at the park, 1600 Garden Highway. More than 15,000 are expected to attend the each day of the festival, said organizers. Plenty of photos help show the excitement of the festival.

Delicious event: With the theme of “Delicious Foods for a Sweet New Year,” the 37th annual Sacramento Jewish Food Faire will offer treats, music and a blood drive from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. today at Congregation Beth Shalom in Carmichael.
