AM Sacramento: Here’s what you need to know for Sunday

Good morning. Here’s what you need to know today:

Cooler: Sacramento’s weather is expected to cool a bit today, according to the National Weather Service. Today’s forecast calls for a high temperature of 82 degrees, a bit below average for this time of year.

Public Eye: Sacramento County sheriff’s deputies and California Highway Patrol officers accepted free meals worth thousands of dollars from the private company that operates the county’s red-light intersection cameras, then recommended the county choose that company over several competitors for a new red-light contract worth up to $11.8 million, a Sacramento Bee review has found.

King-sized firefight: For the past week, firefighters have been trudging up and down the steep ravines of Eldorado National Forest carrying shovels, hoses and protective gear while they try to do the near-impossible: save every single building threatened by the King fire. In this drought year, fire officials are especially worried about the toll the 2014 fire season is taking on the men and women tasked with keeping California from becoming an inferno. At Apple Hill, business was slow Saturday at the famed orchards, as smoke from the King fire in El Dorado County discouraged people from visiting, owners said. Apple farmers, bakers and craft vendors said foot traffic had dropped by at least 50 percent, marking a gloomy start to the high season that began Labor Day and ends in December.

Diverse goal: At C.K. McClatchy High School, an ad hoc colectiva is exploring ways to encourage minority students to return to teach – a grow-your-own approach to adding greater diversity to the faculty.

Up on the roof: A loosely knit group of local architects, designers and planners has been busy touting one of Sacramento’s least talked about assets – its rooftops. The Rooftop Alliance advocates for the development of urban rooftop gardens be they of the vegetable or flower variety, or just a communal public space.

Taste of Peru: Chefs from the Sacramento area will create native delicacies at the Peruvian Food Festival, which is scheduled from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Ben Ali Shrine Center, 3262 Marysville Blvd. in Sacramento.

Local sports: With the winning goal coming in stoppage time, the Sacramento Republic FC advanced to the USL Pro championship game with a 3-2 victory over the LA Galaxy II on Saturday night at Bonney Field.
