Good morning. Here’s what you need to know today:
Smoky Sierra: Weather worries are nil in Sacramento, but in the Sierra Nevada the smoke from the King fire that started more than a week ago near Pollock Pines is likely to cause some unhealthy atmospheric conditions. The National Weather Service has issued a dense smoke advisory for locations such as South Lake Tahoe, Truckee and Incline Village. In addition, forecasters say that widespread haze from the fire is likely this morning around Blue Canyon. The high in Sacramento is forecast to be 85 degrees under sunny skies.
When it’s right, it’s right: The Grotheer family is good at something. Very good. Of nine siblings, seven have been married at least 50 year. That’s almost a trend unto itself, and it certainly bucks a trend showing increasing numbers of divorces for people older that 60.
Fire - and now smoke: Cooling weather featuring at least some rain helped slow the advance of the massive King fire in the Sierras. But even as firefighters try to take control, smoke from the blaze is having an effect on the region, including having caused cancellation of the Ironman triathlon.

Bringing light from darkness: Art is finding a place to thrive where it might be least expected: a tunnel that is a main thoroughfare for many of Sacramento’s homeless and needy. Two young artists are making it happen, with a bit of help.
Smooth flying?: Not necessarily. In fact a Southwest Airlines flight out of Sacramento got a bit dicey when wing flaps malfunction, forcing the flight to divert to LAX and its longer runways. Passenger Paul Mitchell had some observations about the sort-of wild ride.
Raiders now 0-3: The Oakland Raiders had a chance to tie the score with time running out against the New Englad Patriots. Did they? No, they did not, and on the next play, a Derek Carr pass bounced off his receiver and was intercepted. Game over.
Right the ship: The 49ers went into Sunday’s game against Arizona looking to fix a bunch of things that appeared broken in the previous week’s loss. That meant quarterback Colin Kaepernick needed to make a big difference.
