AM Sacramento: Here’s what you need to know for Saturday

Good morning. Here’s what you need to know today:

After-storm cool: Cool weather is forecast through the weekend in Sacramento with daytime temperatures 7 to 10 degrees below normal for late September. Early autumn can be quite warm in Sacramento. The normal high for this time of year is 86 degrees – and 100-degree readings are not out of the question. However, not this weekend. A high of just 78 degrees is forecast for today and 77 on Sunday. The cool weather comes in the wake of Thursday’s rainstorm that dropped 0.37 of an inch into the Sacramento’s official National Weather Service rainstorm bucket. The city is now at 139 percent of normal rainfall.

Guilty verdict: Daniel William Marsh was found guilty Friday of first-degree murder in the savage April 2013 stabbing deaths of a Davis couple. The verdict Friday in Yolo Superior Court came less than 24 hours after testimony concluded Thursday in the grisly case that shocked the college town.

Small is the new big thing: Zoos around the globe are turning their focus away from large, “splashy” animals and toward smaller, more manageable creatures, a trend reflected in an exhibit that opens this weekend at the Sacramento Zoo.

Refurbished train station: Sacramento city officials next month will launch a $34 million renovation project at the downtown Sacramento Valley Station, improving its passenger service capacity, and expanding its role to include offices, retail spaces, and eateries.

Latin fest at plaza: The Sacramento Hispanic Chamber of Commerce is staging a Latin Food & Music Festival today at Cesar Chavez Plaza to commemorate Hispanic Heritage Month. Along with a variety of food and art, the festival includes dance and musical acts from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The event celebrates the cultures of various Latin countries, including Colombia, El Salvador, Peru and Mexico.

Local sports: Pro soccer – The Sacramento Republic hosts the Harrisburg City at 7:30 p.m. in the USL Pro championship game (Channel 31).

NBA – The Kings will open their training camp this morning at their practice facility in Sacramento. The Bee’s Jason Jones details the outlook for every position:

• At center: Who will back up DeMarcus Cousins

• Power forward: Still searching for answers

• Small forward: After years of questions, stability

• The point: After Isaiah Thomas

• The two: Young and younger
