Bodies of 3 men who tried to rescue child recovered from Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta
The bodies of the three people who went missing in the Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta this weekend were recovered Tuesday evening.
The three adults were swept into the current July 3 near the Three-Mile Slough Bridge and Highway 160, according to a Wednesday news release from the Rio Vista Fire Department. The victims reportedly entered the water to save a juvenile from drowning.
The juvenile made it safely back to shore, but the three adults remained missing after hours of searching, according to the release. The search transitioned to a “recovery mission” Sunday evening.
According to the release, the fire department assisted law enforcement in the recovery effort over the next two days. All three deceased individuals were located by Tuesday evening.
According to an online fundraiser organized by the friends and family of the deceased, the three victims lived in Oakland and originally hailed from Guatemala.
“While we wish the outcome of this incident was very different, we continue to hope for healing and closure for the family and friends of those lost,” the fire department release read. “Far too many lives have been lost in our waterways and in the lakes and rivers of Northern California over the past few weeks.”
The release urged that residents and visitors of the area wear proper life vests while in the water, stressing that “the currents of the Sacramento River and its tributaries are strong and unpredictable.”
