State Fair start looks mild on Friday
The State Fair begins Friday and the weather predicted for the opening day looks marvelous. The annual extravaganza on Cal Expo Boulevard can be brutally hot. But the start will be beautifully mild with a high of 81 degrees forecast for the first day. Today’s expected high in Sacramento: 84 degrees.
Southgate Plaza Walmart holds grand opening
Walmart will host grand-opening festivities today for its new Walmart Neighborhood Market at 4420 Florin Road in the Southgate Plaza shopping complex. The south Sacramento store will open after a 7:30 a.m. ribbon-cutting ceremony. In connection with the store opening, Walmart will present more than $9,000 in grants to local community groups, including the Florin Road Foundation, VFW Post 67, the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department crime-prevention program, the National Academic Youth Corps and Kennedy High School in Sacramento. The store will be open daily from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m.
Eppie’s Great Race times to be set
With the 42nd annual Eppie’s Great Race only 10 days away, it’s time for the “Eppie’s Great Team” to establish prerace times for competitors to beat. The Eppie’s Great Team of “Good Day Sacramento” reporter Melissa Cabral (run), Eppie’s Great Race Foundation president George Johnson (cycle) and Channel 3 reporter Richard Sharp (paddle) will set the team mark. Univision senior producer/editor Angel Preciado and Channel 10 associate producer Michelle Gaskill will set the ironperson times.
Elk Grove weighs massage practice certification
The Elk Grove City Council will consider allowing longtime massage businesses to continue operating in the city without certification from the California Massage Therapist Council. The City Council in April passed an ordinance requiring massage providers to obtain state certification, but staff said this could force responsible businesses to close because their required hours of training occurred too long ago. The City Council will meet at 6 p.m. at City Hall, 8401 Laguna Palms Way.
