California International Marathon: Which Sacramento-area roads will be closed due to race?

Scores of runners will flood the streets of Sacramento when the 41st California International Marathon returns this weekend, closing roads and affecting traffic.

The marathon follows a 26-mile course from Folsom Dam to the California State Capitol in Sacramento.

“With a course that has remained unchanged since its inception, the marathon will temporarily close several streets in downtown, midtown and East Sacramento starting Friday, Dec. 6,” the city of Sacramento said in a news release.

Here’s what you need to know:

What is the California International Marathon?

The California International Marathon is organized by the Sacramento Running Association.

The nonprofit organization, which established in 1982, aims to bring world-class running events to the Sacramento area.

The first California International Marathon was held in December 1983.

Since then, the event has provided opportunities for more than 100,000 runners of all speeds in 40 years.

The Sacramento-based marathon is certified and sanctioned by USA Track and Field.

It’s considered a qualifying event for the Boston Marathon and U.S. Olympic Trials Marathon, according to the Sacramento Running Association.

Where can I find up-to-date info on local street closures?

The California Highway Patrol will be on duty to help navigate the traffic, both runners and drivers.

The CHP, Sacramento Police Department and Folsom Police Department mandate the road closures and have ultimate authority to close and open the roads during the race, the California International Marathon website said.

The road closure schedule is subject to change on race day.

For up-to-date information on street closures and how to avoid them, marathon organizers recommend using the Waze app.
