Applause: Kudos to Matthew Zheng, Luke Gadow, Baskin Robbins, Jim Davis

Kudos to: Matthew Zheng, Mira Loma High School sophomore

Accomplishment: Selected to USA Debate Team

Details: Zheng is one of 12 students from across the country chosen for the team. His travels with the national debate team will take him to places such as Germany and Singapore over the next year.

Kudos to: Placerville police Officer Luke Gadow and Baskin Robbins

Accomplishment: Police donate $250 from Gadow’s championship ice cream scooping

Details: Baskin Robbins held a “scoop off” that was won by Gadow. His winning check was donated to Community Resource Center, a Placerville group that helps the homeless.

Kudos to: Jim Davis, former state geologist

Accomplishment: Received Ian Campbell Award from American Geosciences Institute

Details: The award recognizes Davis for superlative service in geoscience. He has been an advocate for expanding seismic monitoring systems as a tool for assessing earthquake vulnerability and enabling structural engineers to design structures that are more earthquake-resistant.
