Today in Sacramento: Here’s what you need to know for Wednesday

Good morning. Here’s what you need to know today, Wednesday, Nov. 25:

Button up your overcoat

Baby, it’s cold at night. The mercury is dipping around Sacramento. At about 6 a.m. Wednesday the temperature was a chilly 33 degrees at Sacramento International Airport. The little rainstorm is gone and near-freezing weather has arrived.

It’s time to light the city Christmas tree

The city of Sacramento’s Christmas-tree-lighting ceremony will begin at 6 p.m. on K Street in Old Sacramento. The 58-foot tree has been decorated by volunteers with more than 50,000 lights and decorations. The first “Macy’s Theatre of Lights” performance of the season will follow at 6:30 p.m. The show blends lights, sound and visual effects to accompany the reading of the famous holiday poem “The Night Before Christmas.” The show will continue through Dec. 31. Go to www.oldsacramento.com for more information.

Mobile food bank heading to Tahoe

El Dorado County’s Mobile Food Pantry will be in South Lake Tahoe from 10 to 11 a.m. Anyone in need of groceries can go to the American Legion Hall at 2748 Lake Tahoe Blvd. Volunteers also are needed to help with the distribution. Email volunteer@foodbankedc.org for more information.

Police checkpoint

The Sacramento Police Department will conduct a sobriety and driver’s license checkpoint on 21st Street near Capitol Avenue in Sacramento. Officers will stop drivers to look for signs of alcohol or drug impairment and check for licenses. The checkpoint is slated to begin at 7 p.m. and last for five to seven hours.

UC Davis buses to airport

UCD students have additional options to get to the airport Wednesday. Unitrans will run extra hourly buses from the UC Davis Memorial Union to Sacramento International Airport departing from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on the hour. That will supplement Yolobus Route 42A, which also runs from Memorial Union on the half-hour, save for three early morning departures at 4:45 a.m., 5:53 a.m. and 6:31 a.m.
