A large gas line that was severed on 16th Street between Broadway and X Street, prompting evacuations, has been capped, the Sacramento Fire Department reported.
“UPDATE: 16th St. gas leak capped by (PG&E). Evacuations lifted, no injuries, fire crews are clearing scene,” the department posted on Twitter at 3:30 p.m.
About 90 minutes earlier, area businesses had been evacuated and residents warned to keep clear.
“(Two-inch) gas line severed. 16th St closed between X and Broadway. Businesses evacuated. Find alternate routes,” the Fire Department wrote on Twitter.

Fire engines blocked 16th Street near the Tower Theatre and Highway 50 as firefighters worked the scene. Cars had to detour around the blockage at the busy intersection in midtown Sacramento.
