Today in Sacramento: Here’s what you need to know for Friday

Caution, holiday weekend drivers

The California Highway Patrol begins its Labor Day maximum enforcement period at 6:01 p.m. Friday. Drug recognition experts and CHP officers will be on patrol watching for impaired drivers as well as assisting motorists in need throughout the holiday weekend. The enforcement period runs through 11:59 p.m. Monday. According to the CHP, research from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration shows that high-visibility enforcement can reduce impaired driving fatalities by as much as 20 percent.

SacAnime is back

SacAnime returns to the Sacramento Convention Center, 1400 J St., for a three-day run beginning Friday. According to event organizers, SacAnime began as an extension of the quarterly Comic, Toy and Anime Show, which has been running in Sacramento since 1986. Originally a comic book show, the event has grown to encompass all forms of pop culture. Event hours are 10 a.m. to 12:30 a.m. Friday and Saturday and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday.
