85-year-old driver ID’d in fatal Nevada City crash

The California Highway Patrol has identified an 85-year-old man who died Friday afternoon in a fiery crash after his SUV careened off Highway 20/49 south of Nevada City.

Gerald M. Bockting, a resident of Nevada City, crashed around 12:30 p.m. when the Ford Explorer he was driving eastbound veered off the roadway, down a steep embankment and through a metal fence, the CHP reported Saturday.

The Explorer rolled through a field, struck a tree and ended up in the parking lot of a nursery. The crash caused a rupture in the vehicle’s fuel system and the Ford caught fire, the CHP reported.

Witnesses told investigators there was no apparent reason why the Ford left the road. The CHP is considering the possibility Bockting was having medical problems.
