Burton, 39, was arrested Nov. 4, 2013, on suspicion of murdering Melvin Bain, 78, and brutally beating his wife, Jean, also 78, in their Rancho Cordova mobile home the previous day. Jean Bain died of her injuries several days later.
Detectives have said that Burton was acquainted with the Bains and that Melvin Bain occasionally gave her money.
The attack on the Bains allegedly was part of a series of crimes that began early Nov. 3, and included the theft of a Cadillac Eldorado from a neighbor on Aries Way and the robbery of a CVS pharmacy on Zinfandel Drive. The Cadillac was found abandoned, but sheriff’s officials said detectives believe Burton used the car to visit the Bains’ home after the robbery at the pharmacy.
