A man who shot a woman during an attempted purse snatching at a Sacramento shopping center has been sentenced to 31 years to life in prison.
Keandrey Brown, 19, was convicted in October of robbery with the use of a firearm and elder abuse with great bodily injury. A jury acquitted him of a charge of attempted murder. He was sentenced Thursday by Sacramento Superior Court Judge Raoul Thorbourne.
The victim was at a shopping center at Stockton Boulevard and Fruitridge Road on March 5, and Brown watched her walk to the parking lot toward her vehicle. He then attempted to steal the woman’s purse, which was around her neck, according to a Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office news release. The release refers to the woman as older, but does not specify her age.
When Brown was unable to get the purse off the woman’s neck, he shot her twice.

The woman was taken to UC Davis Medical Center, where she immediately underwent surgery to save her life. A complex set of injuries, including a perforated bowel and small intestine, required hours of surgery on two occasions, prosecutors said, and a bullet fragment remains inside her body.
