A man was shot dead this morning during a fight at a Citrus Heights apartment building, police said.

The incident in the 6500 block of Greenback Lane occurred at about 10:37 a.m. The unidentified victim is a man in his early 20s, according to the Citrus Heights Police Department.

Officers responded after a report of shots heard in the area. They provided medical assistance until an emergency team arrived, but the victim was later pronounced dead.

Police described the suspect as a black male wearing a dark-colored sweatshirt driving a silver-colored sedan with damage to its passenger side. He is considered armed and dangerous.

The shooting occurred in a neighborhood of fourplexes, some fronting on Greenback Lane and others on Bremen Drive, west of Van Maren Lane.

Sean Clarke, who lives a few buildings away from where the shooting occurred said he was asleep at the time and didn’t hear anything. A 13-year resident of the neighborhood, Clarke said the incident didn’t surprise him, explaining that a number of people had been coming and going from that unit.

Crime in the neighborhood, he said, “comes in waves. It gets better and gets worse in little pockets.”

Anyone who has additional information or who may have witnessed the shooting is asked to call the Citrus Heights Police Department at (916) 727-5500.
