Sacramento Police Department officers are investigating a fatal shooting that occurred Sunday afternoon near the 7900 block of 48th Avenue in Sacramento’s Glen Elder neighborhood, the department reported through its Twitter account.

Yellow police tape cordoned off a block of 48th Avenue between Sun River Drive and Power Inn Road. Families in the area were huddled together, crying. An unidentified woman who claimed to be the wife of the man repeatedly cried out, “That’s my husband,” as family and friends consoled her.

Police spokeman Matthew McPhail said reports of a shooting happened around 4:30 p.m. When officers arrived, they found the man who had been shot. He was pronounced dead after life-saving measures, McPhail said.

“Prior to the shooting taking place, the victim was at a family gathering at a nearby home on 48th Street,” McPhail added. “The suspect is not known, but we are trying to gather as much information as we can.”
