A man detained following an early morning fire Monday at a home in Sacramento’s Valley Hi area has been charged with arson.
The Sacramento Fire Department announced that investigators determined the fire in the 100 block of Majorca Circle was arson. Gui Jun Zhao, 37, was arraigned Wednesday afternoon on one count of arson of an inhabited structure or property and remains in the Sacramento County Jail, according to a Fire Department news release.
Police arrested Zhao after he allegedly tried to torch the home and was chased down by the homeowner with a machete.
Firefighters responded to a neighbor’s 911 call reporting a structure fire about 1:45 a.m. and arrived to find neighbors restraining Zhao on the front lawn of the residence. The small fire in front of the home was quickly extinguished.
