A 16-year-old baby-sitter has been arrested on suspicion of felony child abuse after a 2-year-old Yuba County girl suffered a serious head injury.

The girl was recovering from emergency brain surgery Friday morning after being taken by helicopter to a Sacramento-area hospital from a Brownsville residence Thursday afternoon, according to a Yuba County Sheriff’s Office news release.

Deputies responded to a home in the 8400 block of La Porte Road in north Yuba County regarding a medical aid call for an unresponsive toddler about 2:20 p.m. Thursday. Medical personnel found the child with injuries that appeared suspicious, and detectives took over the investigation as a possible case of physical child abuse.

During a preliminary investigation, detectives learned that the 2-year-old and three other children, ranging in age from an infant to a 5-year-old, were left at the home with a 16-year-old male baby-sitter, who was known to the family. The baby-sitter was interviewed, and investigators learned that he had attempted to discipline the 2-year-old, allegedly resulting in the head injury, the news release said.

The teenager was arrested on suspicion of child abuse as well as an outstanding warrant out of Sacramento County and was booked into juvenile hall. His name has not been released because of his age.

The Sheriff’s Office said the family and the suspect recently moved from the Sacramento area to Yuba County.
