A man died in police custody Tuesday after stabbing himself and being controlled by officers using a Taser and other means, West Sacramento police said.
Officers were called about 3:45 a.m. Tuesday to the 1900 block of Park Boulevard, where several people said that a man was yelling and throwing items. Officers unsuccessfully tried to calm the man.
The man started to stab himself with a knife. Officers used a Taser, which had no effect on the man, said Officer Ryan Lukins, police spokesman. Officers fired rubber projectiles at the man, which allowed police to handcuff him. Lukins said the man was breathing at the time he was restrained.
When an ambulance arrived, the man’s breathing became shallow and eventually stopped. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation was performed, but the still-unidentified man died at the scene.

Lukins said another Yolo County agency would conduct an independent investigation into the man’s death.
