Teenage girl dies after 50-foot fall in Lake Tahoe area

A 14-year-old girl died Wednesday after falling approximately 50 feet while hiking near the Vikingsholm Trail in the Lake Tahoe area.

The El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office received a report of the incident at 12:06 p.m. An off-duty law enforcement officer who was in the area came to the girl’s aid and began CPR before on-duty emergency personnel arrived, according to a Sheriff’s Office news release.

The girl sustained major injuries in the fall. After extensive lifesaving efforts were conducted at the scene, she was transported to Barton Memorial Hospital in South Lake Tahoe, where she died, the news release said.

The girl’s name has not been released.

Sheriff’s deputies were assisted by California Highway Patrol, Cal-Star air ambulance, California State Parks, Lake Valley Fire and South Tahoe emergency medical services personnel.
