A large grass fire east of Herald in a rural area of Sacramento County was reported fully contained with 68 acres burned as of 7:50 p.m. Thursday.
The fire, off of Clay East Road, near the Amador County line, started Thursday afternoon and was reported at one point to have burned 80 acres. The acreage was reduced as a result of better mapping, the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection reported on Twitter.
Shortly before 6 p.m., crews were fighting another big grass fire near Fairfield that was started by a traffic collision. The fire had shut down Highway 12 and caused authorities to evacuate Pennsylvania Avenue, Fairfield police wrote on Twitter.
As of about 7:15 p.m., Solano County Fire reported that one lane of Highway 12 was being reopened.
