Auburn police arrested a man on suspicion of killing a 77-year-old Thursday.

At about 2:35 p.m., the Police Department received a call reporting a physical altercation that has just occurred in the 600 block of Mikkelsen Drive in Auburn.

The suspect in the assault, Nick Ricketts, left the scene prior to the arrival of the police and medical personnel, police said in a news release.

The victim was transported to a local hospital but died of injuries he sustained in the assault.

Police found Ricketts a short time later on Auburn Ravine Road. He was arrested and booked into the Placer County Jail for homicide.

Ricketts and the victim knew each other, police said.

A bail amount was not immediately available.

The investigation is ongoing, and information is “very limited at this time,” police said.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Auburn Police Department Investigation’s Division at 530-823-4237, ext. 238, or the communications center at 530-823-4234.
