A blaze that destroyed part of a vacant Woodland home early Friday morning appears suspicious to officials, Woodland Fire Department Battalion Chief Ernie Fatta said.

The fire in a duplex on 6th Street near Cottage Drive was reported by a neighbor at about 4:10 a.m. Fatta said Woodland firefighters responded to a fire at the same address about a month ago.

Fatta said the fire started at the back of the home in a side yard and spread to the duplex. The unit located at the back of the residence was destroyed and the second unit was partially burned by the fire.

“It was a big fire. At one point there was probably 20-foot flames,” Fatta said. “Our concerns were to keep it confined to the duplex.”

Electricity to the home had been cut off following last month’s fire, which also started at the home’s exterior, Fatta said.

He said fire investigators were at the scene to determine the fire’s cause and whether it is connected to last month’s fire.
