Police are investigating gunshots and a car fire near Sacramento Executive Airport, Sacramento Police announced early Sunday morning.

A section of 24th Street between Glen Ellen Circle and Fernandez Drive will be closed until about noon as officers conduct an investigation, authorities said.

Just before midnight on Saturday, officers were already in the neighborhood when they heard gunshots, police spokeswoman Linda Matthew said. When they went to investigate, they discovered a car “fully engulfed in flames,” she said.

The car had left the road and ended up on its side near a line of trees. Matthew said the officers broke the driver’s window and pulled an adult male out of the burning vehicle. They began performing CPR before transporting him to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries, Matthew said.

She said the driver was injured in the crash, but it’s unclear if he also has gunshot wounds. Responding officers stopped a car leaving the area and detained the occupants as witnesses. Homicide detectives and crime scene investigators are canvassing the area, she said.

She asked anyone who saw anything related to this incident to call the Sacramento Police Department’s non-emergency line at (916) 264-5471.
