A roof fire at a commercial building undergoing remodeling in a Roseville shopping center sent black smoke into the sky Monday afternoon, but it was controlled before causing any damage to nearby businesses.
Jaime Garrett, Roseville Fire Department spokeswoman, said firefighters responded at 3:22 p.m. to a report of black smoke coming from the building at 6740 Stanford Ranch Road. A Sports Authority store was formerly at the address before the retailer shut down last year. Dick’s Sporting Goods was scheduled to take over the lease at that location.
Firefighters arrived to find a roof fire. Garrett said construction crews were not working on the roof when the fire started, but they had been a short time earlier. No one was injured.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Garrett said an estimate of damage to the building was not available. Fire crews were able to prevent damage to neighboring businesses, including a Ross Dress for Less store on one side and smaller stores on the other. Those businesses were able to reopen shortly before 5 p.m.
Five Star Boulevard between Fairway Drive and Stanford Ranch Road was closed to traffic, but opened shortly before 5 p.m., according to the Roseville Police Department.
Garrett said seven engines three fire trucks responded, and Roseville fire crews were assisted by the Rocklin Fire Department.
