A grass fire in the Mather area, south of Douglas Road near Zinfandel Drive, was reported contained about 5 p.m. Monday after burning two abandoned buildings.

Capt. Chris Vestal, Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District spokesman, said the fire was reported about 3:30 p.m. The burned structures were vacant commercial buildings, he said.

About 40 firefighters responded with seven engines, two water tenders and a bulldozer. Vestal said erosion and canals that cut through the property made access to the site difficult, and winds helped spread flames through the dry grass. Fire officials Monday evening revised their estimate of the acreage burned, placing the number at 52 acres, a reduction from an earlier aerial estimate of 140 acres.

The cause of the fire has not been determined.
