A man has been arrested on animal cruelty charges in Elk Grove after he allegedly stabbed and barbecued a family’s pet turtle.

Eric Pauly, 35, of Citrus Heights, was arrested by Elk Grove police Monday on suspicion of maliciously maiming an animal and violation of probation.

Elk Grove police spokesman Officer Christopher Trim said that officers were called to a home in the 9700 block of White Pine Way, where the pet turtle was found stabbed and barbecued.

The turtle was not killed to eat, but rather to inflict death, Trim said.

“The turtle is a delicacy in some areas of the country but this was done with malicious intent,” Trim said.

The incident occurred at the home of the family who owned the pet. Pauly had permission to stay at the home, Trim said.
