A father alerted Placer County Sheriff’s deputies so they could arrest a registered sex offender who had been hanging around youth baseball games.

George Frederick Matson, 78, was booked into Placer County Jail in Auburn on Monday for allegedly failing to register as a sex offender.

Matson had been seen attending children’s baseball games in Auburn and had caused parents to question his intentions, according to a sheriff’s department Facebook post. In June, detectives identified the man as Matson – and asked parents to alert law enforcement if he returned to the ball fields.

On Monday, an observant father of a ballplayer spotted Matson at an Auburn restaurant and called 911. Deputies confirmed that Matson had failed to register as a sex offender.

In his vehicle was baseball equipment.

“We would like to acknowledge the baseball parents who kept an eye out for Matson,” stated the sheriff’s Facebook post. “Because of them, we located Matson much faster than if we had been working alone.”
