A crash on southbound Interstate 5 killed a 25-year-old Sacramento man Saturday morning after the car he was riding in veered off the road and crashed into a tree, catching on fire, said California Highway Patrol North Sacramento spokesman Richard Quintana.
A 21-year-old woman from Citrus Heights, who was the driver of the vehicle, got out of the car following the crash, Quintana said. She was sent to UC Davis Medical Center with a broken right leg. The man was found dead in the front passenger seat after firefighters put out the flames.
CHP officers received reports of the crash at around 3:53 a.m., taking them just north of Airport Boulevard. The two were in a red 2009 Dodge Caliber, according to Quintana.
The cause of the crash is under investigation. It was not known whether drugs or alcohol played a role in the incident.
