Correctional officer injured in attack at Folsom prison

A correctional officer suffered a head injury Friday morning in an assault at California State Prison, Sacramento, in Folsom.

The attack occurred about 9:30 a.m. Montoya Nichols, a 26-year-old inmate, approached a correctional officer and began striking the officer in the head and face with his fists, according to a California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation news release. Other staff members intervened and used force to halt the attack.

The officer suffered head injuries that required treatment at an outside medical facility. Nichols sustained minor injuries and has been transferred to another institution, the news release said.

Nichols entered the prison system Jan. 26 from San Luis Obispo County. He is serving a seven-year sentence for assault with force likely to produce great bodily injury, battery by gassing, and resisting or deterring a peace officer with the threat of violence, according to the news release.

California State Prison, Sacramento, houses about 2,300 general population inmates and employs about 1,700 people.
