Stockton police have arrested a mother for alleged child abuse after her 20-month-old son died of injuries in a hospital, the city’s Police Department said.

Stockton police said they booked Mavis Allen, 24, earlier this month on a charge of child neglect after St. Joseph’s Medical Center contacted authorities Aug. 6 about Allen’s son. The boy arrived at the hospital in cardiac arrest and with “obvious trauma,” police said.

Despite lifesaving measures, the child died after being moved to Children’s Hospital Oakland, according to police. A post on the Police Department’s Facebook page states that an autopsy indicated the boy’s head injuries were “most likely not caused by an accident.”

On Friday, the San Joaquin County District Attorney’s Office upgraded the charges against Allen to child abuse resulting in death.

According to the police, a subsequent investigation found that the child’s alleged abuse took place in a Stockton motel room at 550 W. Martin Luther King Blvd.
