Sacramento Police Sgt. Bryce Heinlein provides details about a fatal stabbing Friday morning in the 5600 block of 39th Avenue.

A man was fatally stabbed during an altercation Friday morning in the 5600 block of 39th Avenue, the Sacramento Police Department reports.

Police responded to a 5:50 a.m. call of two people fighting inside a house, Sgt. Bryce Heinlein said. When they arrived, they found a man in his 50s lying dead in the laundry room.

The other combatant, a man in his 60s, sustained superficial cuts in the altercation and was taken to a local hospital, where he remains in stable condition and under police custody. Heinlein said police were investigating the relationship between the two men as well as the two or three other people in the house.

Juanita and Alexander Aquino stopped to gawk at the police tape and cars during their walk to Peter Burnett Elementary School, where Alexander is a student. The Aquinos have lived on 40th Avenue for two years, Juanita said.

“It’s normally safe and peaceful. I mean, we walk to school every day,” she said.

The 5600 block of 39th Avenue was closed most of the day while homicide detectives and other police personnel continued their investigation.
