A man was convicted Thursday in Sacramento Superior Court of second-degree murder and child assault causing death in the 2014 killing of a toddler.
Guyland D. Washington of Sacramento was 19 when his then-girlfriend, Alyssa Donnell, left her 14-month-old daughter, Leila Shehadeh, in his care while she went to work. Donnell, then 20, returned that afternoon to find Leila not breathing and unresponsive.
Donnell and Washington rushed Leila to nearby Sacramento Fire Station No. 17. Paramedics rushed Leila to the UC Davis Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead shortly thereafter.
An autopsy showed Leila suffered a skull fracture with associated brain swelling as well as rib fractures and significant bruising. The cause of death was determined to be intentionally inflicted blunt force injures.
