The 35-year-old man fatally shot by Lodi police Monday morning after allegedly pointing a gun at an officer during a traffic stop has been identified as Matthew David Palaita.
An officer stopped a vehicle in the area of Pleasant Avenue and Turner Road at about 8:20 a.m. During the stop, a passenger in the back seat of the vehicle began to behave in a suspicious manner, prompting the officer to request additional units, according to a Lodi Police Department news release.
The passenger got out of the vehicle with a firearm and pointed it at one of the officers, the news release said. Officers fired at the suspect, striking him.
Officers performed life-saving measures until emergency medical personnel arrived. Palaita was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the Police Department.

The shooting will be investigated by members of the Lodi Police Department, San Joaquin County District Attorney’s Office, California Department of Justice and the San Joaquin County Coroner’s Office, in accordance with the San Joaquin County Officer-Involved Critical Incident Protocol, the Police Department said in a release.
