California Highway Patrol investigators determined that Dawson was behind the wheel of a late 1990s Ford Ranger pickup truck that struck Melgoza as he was walking near Elkhorn Boulevard and 20th Street in the early morning hours of Dec. 14, 2015. Melgoza died at the scene.
The CHP reported that investigators received several tips from the public in the weeks following the incident. Information obtained from the tips led officers to the location of the Ford Ranger and to Dawson’s arrest.
