Got an email about a parking ticket? Don’t pay it, Davis police say

The Davis Police Department is warning locals to be on the lookout for an impersonator trying to scam people with fake parking tickets.

Emails from “City Police Department” have been popping up in residents’ inboxes, but Davis police denied culpability in a Facebook post.

The email being circulated includes a description of some traffic offense, a citation number and a link where violators can enter credit card information to pay their fines. It also says a court appearance is mandatory, which is not the case for most tickets if the recipients chooses not to contest them.

“Please know we are not sending out emails regarding parking fines. If you receive anything similar to this, do not open the link!” Davis police said in the Facebook post.

Legitimate parking citations can be paid on the city of Davis’ website.
