Two people were killed early Wednesday when a 1998 Volkswagen Beetle slammed into two trees in Pollock Pines.
The driver, 67-year-old Phillip Charles Smith, of Pollock Pines, didn’t adjust for a right-hand curve while eastbound on Pony Express Trail near Elkhorn Mill Road, according to a California Highway Patrol news release.
Smith drove at an unknown speed onto two shoulders north of the road, one asphalt and one dirt, before sideswiping a large tree.
From there, the Beetle continued eastbound on the dirt shoulder until crashing head-on into another tree, killing Smith and his passenger, 72-year-old Katheryn Ruby Hill, of Pollock Pines. Both were wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash.
